Remember how some pirates once asked Zoro why he wasn't the captain? And that is merely because of his strenght and nothing else. If even some casual pirates would think that he deserved to be Captain it seems that by a consequence he left quite the mark back in the East Blue and I'm sure the New World is proving no dissimilar.
