Legend of the carp turned into a dragon is extremely popular, I think everyone in the countries that celebrate the Lunar New Year know about it.It's not strange that oda uses it, but how a devil fruit eater can swim to cross the falls becomes a dragon

It appears the reason why Kaido doesn't look like a Dragon in base is because he isn't.

My argument for Kaido not being a Dragon, were his Oni horns that were dominant in both humanoid and Dragon form. Dragon's don't have these horns.

He basically became a Magikarp that developed into Gyarados.

The thing is Yamato literally called him a dragon a few moments ago. Kaido used his FLAMES to float onigashima.
water dragons(gyarados) has no flames.
kaidos df honestly makes no sense.

Just posting some background info as some may take this as Kaido not being a dragon.

In Chinese mythology:

At the Yellow at Henan (Chinese: 河南; pinyin: Hénán; Wade–Giles: Ho-nan) is a waterfall called the Dragon Gate. It is said that if certain carp called yulong can climb the cataract, they will transform into dragons.


So it looks like Kaido got the mythical carp DF that transformed into a dragon.

Oda foreshadowed this with how to get into Wano!! Haha everyone missed it WOW!!

The exception proves the rule. Maybe Kaido ate that one DF that allows him to swim. After all it is also a mythical ability and mythical abilities give you magical powers.
