Great chapter.

I had a whole post I wanted to give on Why WB didn't go after Kaido but the explanation Whitebeard gives here is actually way better.

Oda makes it clear that they were always planning to invade Kaido's territory at some point and take him down for Oden's sake. But they never got the opportunity. Real Empires can't just go war on a whim. To Quote the Art of War: "He who wishes to fight must first count the cost."

Not only is this consistent with Whitebeard's character and highlighting part of what made him a brilliant military leader but also the reality of going to War with another Yonkou and the risk of losing all of your comrades that you wanted to protect in the first place. Even if WB won he would have lost more than he bargained far on top of being potentially taken out by another Emperor afterward.

So I thought this initially had something to do with the code between Pirates and while I still think that argument has merit this explanation makes way more sense.

It's even more interesting that this was what Ace had been training for. To take down Kaido. But he ended up missing that chance due to Teach killing off Thatch. Ace in his hot headed rage dropped everything in order to chase Teach and lost his life as a result.

If he had waited and slowly built up his power he could have found the right opportunity to go after his enemies whenever he wanted. But Ace fought him before he was ready. This is exactly what Shanks warned WB about. This also serves to highlight the difference between Ace and his little brother. Luffy no doubt wants to take down the likes of Blackbeard and Akainu but he doesn't let his desire for revenge become an obsession. Those two will get theirs when the time comes and Luffy will patiently enjoy his Adventure until then. Rather than become obsessed like Ace did.

The Road To Harmony
Yamato kills Kaido as their Strawhat inauguration.

On a serious note, this chapter is definitely setup for whatever occurs on 1000, but it also serves as wrapping up loose ends.

The first loose end was Ace who was an important piece in the beginning stages of the arc, but took a back seat up until recently. We learn Ace did do more on Wano and even attempted to liberate the country. Oda once again ties Ace's will to Luffy's by signifying the importance of Yamato's cuffs being their literal and figurative shackle. Ace did not have the strength at the time to accomplish his goal of defeating Kaido or freeing Yamato and bringing Tama back. All things Luffy will do in his stead. Luffy, while probably still beaten up inside over Ace's death, remains poker faced on the matter and instead rectifies things by fulfilling Ace's will alongside his own. Inherited will has taken on a more spiritual form in Wano. It was once typical for characters to be there to witness what their predecessors couldn't accomplish, but in instances with Luffy and Zoro, they've been echoing almost the exact same sentiments and actions as those who's wills they've inherited through well placed build ups.

Oda finally addresses the Whitebeard Pirates inaction. Ultimately, the one he settled on was...adequate. They at least contemplated helping Wano as a posthumous debt to Oden, but weighed the options. That doesn't mean helping Wano in Oden's name is against Newgate's character. It's perfectly in line with his character. Newgate was characterized as someone who cared deeply not only for his crew but the allies he has made. The countless allies owe Whitebeard for what they've done for him. And as it stands, Wano was the home country to his "brother." But I get why Oda did not want Newgate to interfere. Regardless of the outcome, both crews would've been decimated, and there would be a lot of plot lines that would be non-started because of it. The little moment of Marco shedding tears from remembering Ace was touching. Oda places more focus on Newgate and his relationship with his crew, but it's important to remember that the Whitebeard Pirates as a whole are family. Marco views Ace as a little brother as much as he views Newgate as a father.

Nami and Tama bring up a plan they've been working on off-panel. This will likely involve trying to subdue Ulti and P1 through the Kibi Dango. Whether that means using them on the siblings or amassing a gifter squad to help them, remains to be seen, but Oda is committing to the human duo/w Tama toppling them in some fashion. And it's never a dull moment for a Nami and Usopp combo. Oh, and Tama learns Ace is Luffy's brother, though Oda doesn't dwell on that too much since it's not that big a deal at this point. Tama loved Luffy regardless at that point.

Absent in the actual chapter, but who's presence is palpable is Luffy. Each chapter since 993 has updated us on the floor Luffy was on heading to the top. It's a safe assumption he makes it to the top on 1000, since the Emperors are right there waiting to get interrupted in the middle of their convo. Besides that, Yamato mentions Luffy being a D. and even pulls out what looks to be Oden's journal. Massive stuff Oda's dangling on us, but I wouldn't get too excited. I just don't see Oda revealing something as big as the secret of the Ds through a mundane journal log.

Finally, Linlin and Kaido. These two are climbing up my ranks of favorite duos. Both monstrosities, the unstoppable force and the immovable object, yet they chat like two acquaintances who reunited at a Tim Hortons. Linlin does reveal some of her hidden motives, which predictably involve the RP and Kaido being fully aware she's using him. It's consistent with Kaido's words to the Scabbards.

Loyalty and trust have been a constant motif of the arc. It starts with Law's dubious activities jeopardizing his alliance with Luffy, the total collapse of Kid's alliance, Apoo's disownment from the Beast Pirates, and a Samurai's oath to their lord. And now we have the main antagonist harboring a morbid perspective on pirates and alliances. They definitely stem from Xebec and his gathering of many powerful figures and it not working out. When you have that many extraordinary figures on a crew, coercion and submission will not work. This is exemplified perfectly with the Strawhats, a crew composed of exceptional members connected by an unbreakable bond forged through trust.

Oh yeah, and Kaido's a devil fruit user. Oda doesn't give us a model, but the long standing debate on where Kaido's powers partial stem from is over. And Oda did a pretty good job of pulling the rug out on us by insinuating Kaido's ability to produce clouds was natural. The fish family does make sense for Kaido's fruit. Eastern Dragons are predominately associated with the sea, and are hailed as benevolent gods. Kaido has been remarked as a god by the people of Wano. And who is god's natural enemy? "The Devil," or in this case "D."
