At the pace Oda is pumping out chapters? No chance it ends in 3-5 years. There are still so many open-ended plot points that haven't even been touched on yet.

I've been reading weekly since Thriller Bark, but I'd say the series had a big jump in popularity during Enies Lobby. Then it basically exploded when Marineford, and Strong World came out. After that One Piece was always at the top of manga sales charts.
