I've heard theories like "Kaido's ambition is for Yamato to inherit his will so he can die, but then Yamato dying means he won't have a legacy". Not saying it makes sense, just saying what I've seen people discuss.
I don't believe that he'd do it, but I can't help but notice death flags, and I'm willing to debate it while thirsty for more chapters. The longer it's been since the last chapter, the lower my standards.
It could be this, but it kind of makes Yamato a pointless character. I personally think it's distracting from Yamato actually beating Kaido, currently writing up a post on this to share during break week.
