Except Oda can easily find power up for characters without boiling down to "friendship" For a starter Nami could get back Zeus and even get prometheus. Usopp could drastically improve his haki or make some combo/gadget/trap. Same for other straw hats, who know what Brook and Robin awakening...

I doubt it was necessary for Luffy to G4 for a number yet Oda still had him do it. And there wasn't Law or KId around to instill a sense of competition in him so no "he went G4 to impress X".
