The fact that they couldn't keep him in Jail for more time aka a fully fledged sentence just shows that the evidence wasn't enough for that thing to happen. It doesn't matter if he ended up snitching or whatever, you don't release a sex trafficker even if he's being kept arrested in his house. It would surprise you how much people spend way too much in Jail when the only proof available is someone's words.
Yeah, you might work in a court of law but surprise surprise, and I know that it might sound crazy but, your judicial system probably doesn't work like ours. Because it's applied in your country it doesn't mean that it's true for every country in the world.

He wasn't in jail, he was in custody. That is a big difference. You can't keep someone in custody for more than X amount of time, and you can't put him in jail because he isn't sentenced yet
You would be surprised how many low to mid tier criminals we release in order for them serve for us as informants and snitches
