Character Discussion Characters we are supposed to admire or like but that you don't

Luffy.

I used to like Luffy a lot. Before he became a cocky cunt during battles.
That dumbass smirk ruined the character for me.
He was supposed to be a carefree idiot with good battle instinct, not some spoiled brat with an attitude.
I believe the turning point was when Luffy set himself goals beyond becoming PK. When he made plans to take down Kaido.
Normally Luffy would just go with the flow and stumble into adventures. It could have been done the same way here.
Instead he get a Luffy, that usually never cared for anyonre unless they directly got in his or his friends way (was even willing to let Arlong molest kids until Nami explicitely asked him to help), actively choosing a target... Talk about out of character.

Him acting utterly oblivious to the constant savior of the world stuff is not helping either.
Nika mentioned 500 times in his vicinity: no reaction
Some giant says it and Oda figured that its getting weird by now: "oh that guy has nothing to do with me, shucks"

idk why Oda wants to pretend like Luffy is not acting like the chosen golden boy that he apparently is.

Honestly Luffy is probably the blandest character in the series

His smirk to me is cringe lol very cringe , he’s a complete ass-pull , Hancock liking him is also a complete ass-pull

All of the strawhats are literally better than he is

Zeff because of the sexism trope which isn't good in the slightest when it's a fantasy story where every character regardless of gender can be superhuman and can be quite villainous.

Whitebeard, his goal was to have a family but didn't fully 100% wanna commit to it. Unless Oda fully stated whitebeard was infertile, he had Stussy who wanted him to be her baby daddy.

Sanji, the perverted gag is soo lame and so way overdone. Could be one of the many reason why japan is having a birth fertility crisis because it telling Youngs boys it cool to be a pervert and a creep to gurls.

Luffy is indeed annoying and he comes off as more cocky, arrogant, obnoxious than really carefree. None of his victories and accomplishments post ts feel earned and each time he got beaten feels like a well-earned comeuppance.

Nami decided this. Not Luffy. Luffy never targetted Crocodile directly. He only did so because Nami wanted money and he was interested in his strength.
Offing Kaido was Luffys idea before Law even mentioned it.
Even if Luffy called the shots it would still be different. Luffy and crew stumbled into a situation where Igaram begs them to help out.
Its pure happenstance where as for Kaido its a planned assassination when they guy has not really done anything to them at all.

Nami made the original deal, but Luffy was pretty clear about wanting to beat crocodile up for messing up vivis country. Luffy didn't even know who kaido was,he just told law he wanted to take down powerful pirates who stand in the way of his dream, what's wrong with that?

wanting to beat crocodile up for messing up vivis country
A reason he stumbled into. A very basic reason. He does not even care for the country, really. He cares for Vivi and that one guy that had no water. This is Luffy.
wanted to take down powerful pirates who stand in the way of his dream
How was Kaido in his way? All Luffy needed was the RPG and he got that fairly easily. Luffy also decided to take down Kaido before he has some emotional reason to do so.
There is nothing wrong with it. Its just not how Luffy used to act, which makes it out of character for him.

Yes,but that reason ultimately has nothing to do with nami's "deal". He says it himself to crocodile,he wants him to give vivi her countdy back . The other yonko are in his way because they're prominent pirates who want to become pk... simple as.

The problem with Whitebeard is that while he did love his "sons" he still led them in a battle where he surely knew that many of them would die, just for one of them, Ace while he may have had other options to try to save Ace without such sacrifices and risks. Him refusing to do the same for Oden against Kaido also makes him look like a hypocrite.
The problem is you don't grasp that WB is not supposed to be a saint and head of the church but he Is a pirate leader of pirate crew. People realise what being a pirate means it's not a safe house .

Ace: Fuck that retard.
Usopp: I don't even know if we are "supposed" to like him but life would definitely be better with him burried 6ft underground.
Hancock: Fuck her and her big ass forehead in both the literal way (cuz she's still hot nonetheless) and in a figurative way (cuz I still dislike her bitch ass)

The thing is,he basically was a saint by portrayal. Oda has made it clear that pirates can have all types of philosophies(someone like doflamingo is basically a pirate fascist for example). In fmi it's mentioned that he was the only human the country ever felt like helped them. However at the same time, Wb wasn't the best leader, and it's because of Shanks that his crew is still alive today

Yeah, whitebeard had a habit of being rude and disrespectful to younger characters, but really oda writes him to be a good guy with little interest in money or treasure and mostly just wanted to protect his friends(even roger has a bad side where he used to slaughter entire crews and armies)..
