Controversial Do some people pretend to be "woke" in their One Piece criticism, just for agenda?

#23
one piece is about racial and social justice
yup it's woke, literally
but feminism is not part of Japan's culture (perhaps) and Oda is a man of his time

p.s

Big Mom > Wonder Woman btw
this wasn't even debate if Big Mom wasn't nerfed and beaten for no good reason

Some people like to criticize Oda for his sexism, for the fanservice, and the writing of the character of Sanji, saying he liked Pudding who's a minor (for real world laws),etc.
But,at the same time, these same people, often criticize Usopp calling him a "bum" because he is a character who doesnt adhere to the "toxic masculinity" idea of what a male character should be,and often praise characters like Zoro only for physical strenght and not for other qualities.
These criticisms do not relate to each other in any way

That does not make the series woke. If it were, you wouldn't have gotten the transvestite kingdom or the recent parody of political language on Elbaph.

Caring about justice of any kind != woke.

I'm a student of English literature.
and soon will get a PHD on it so I know literary movements like the back of my hand
parody itself is a postmodern movement
it's all woke
one piece is woke in more than 20 ways

p.s
I'm not here for a twitter-debate
or even defend radicalism in woke
but if a story is about social justice, it's woke on it's core
having a female MC or person of color MC is not the ONLY ways a story is woke

Depends on your age (say, a 19 year old with a 16 year old vs a 40 year old with a 16 year old). The later is understandably still frowned upon.

I'll say, though, that some 16 yo girls look like children but some others you wouldn't know they aren't 18 or 19 without a look at their identity cards, just like some girls over 18 are still asked to show theirs to buy alcohol and such.
100 yr old and 18 yr old is better

"—often used in contexts that suggest someone's expressed beliefs about such matters are not backed with genuine concern or action"

I'm not interested in that kind of debate, either, they're tiring. I'm aware of the original meaning of the word, but it changed a lot over the years, which is more the meaning I assume the original poster was going for.

the meaning didn't changed
but "people" use it wrong
cause most people don't care about details
rightfully so

on it's principal, one piece is woke all the way in the actual way
but it's not feminist (also a woke move) cause of Japan ...

that's all I'm saying
I'm not comparing Goat-Piece to shit-shows who may or may not be "woke"

Well, for ussop everyone on the strawhats has some moments of aura and they get serious, ussop doesnt, he has no special powers like Nami and chopper do, he gets killed by Arlong, he’s weak as shit, hasn’t improved since pretimeskip and his pretimeskip self isn’t holding up like it is for Brook. Ussop is also terrified of everything, and it’s only for like 5 minutes then he’s forced onto the island until he doesn’t do shit. He’s flat out useless and would be good to A. Die or B. Get the mark fruit or a power up. A crew like the strawhats doesn’t need a sniper who doesnt fire his weapon

And you fucking dumbass we have ivankov and an island of gay, lesbian, bi, trans, whatever the hell you call them, with ivankov being one of the damn main players in the whole show, of course it’s going to be woke

I think that might have been the case in the past but it's a little bit past that now. You call it people using it wrong, and it might have started that way, but I'm sure in some cases it was also people willfullly using ironically.

At the end of the day, if the default way people use a word changes, so does the meaning, and the dictionary will eventually reflect it (it already does in the notation I quoted). It's a fact that a lot of people use the word differently now.

That happens all the time in every language. That and neologisms are the only way a language evolves.

Is this hypocritical? Do some people act woke, just for their agendas?
of course they do

all the people on the gay trans island are generally portrayed as good people and they're allies of the revolutionary army. people like to call oda homophobic or w/e for his character designs but 1. some people irl actually look like that. they choose to dress like that and not shave or whatever on purpose. some people just do that. and 2. 95 percent of these characters are good guys and allies of the protagonists. the only gay villain in the entire series is that twink Dellinger i think

Imo, I don't think One Piece is "Woke" by definition. Or at least I didn't notice any "woke" elements in it.

I don't think Japanese authors or Japanese people even know what woke is.

I do not think he's homophobic or he wouldn't have created Mr2 and given him all the respect he got in the end. I mentioned them because it's easy to accuse him of such for their portrayal and Sanji's reactions. I'm not on social media but I'm positive people must have a problem with those. I doubt we will see anything similar on the LA.

I think it's a bigger problem when an author tries to avoid phobia accusations too hard and they overcompensate, like season 3 (I think it was) of The Boys.

Maeve surviving because "We knew from the beginning this wouldn't be a show that kills its gays" but still put her character in a position where she shouldn't have logically survived... having her avoid any responsibility for the crimes she committed throughout the series... and having her exit the show immediately afterwards anyway, making it so she could have just died heroically as redemption and it would have been better for the character.

Or just avoid the lethal situation entirely in the writing room so her surviving doesn't raise any problems, she didn't need to die.
