I think he wants Zoro to delude himself, because:
1. You himself says he lost, so why deny the truth
2. Pirates don't play fair
Oda wrote these things, so the only explanation is that he is depicting a character in denial.
Otherwise he would spell otherwise.

nope, Zoro is protected by plot armor of promise, he'll never lose a 1vs1 fight
Oda can only play with him in case of chaotic situations with multiple enemies or some distraction stuff. Things like Apoo, or Rooftop or Water 7 where he got distracted.
The closest thing I can think of complete & utter defeat was Enel, cause it was 5 against Enel alone. so this one alone I think counts as defeat, but even then, Oda's cope is Enel's DF is bad match up for Zoro + Enel isn't a swordsman or in general term isn't any type of blade user
but yeah, too much plot armor to protect this marimo hhhh

There are no appropriate terms for this but the way I explain in Zoro's case:
I associate losing with Zoro picking a fight, fairly, 1vs1, fresh condition and not ending up as the winner of that challenge.
I associate defeat with Zoro being taken out, by any means necessary, by as many opponents as necessary.
Why I make this distinction?
Because it fits perfectly with Oda's showings regarding Zoro never losing since Mihawk.
One can never be the strongest when everything is on the table but one can be the strongest in a fair 1vs1 duel.

WB didn't need to be 1v1 to be the strongest, he simply was. There was no caveat, no excuse. Seems like you're creating artificial labels to justify your canon, while the manga states that WB was the strongest, and he was a pirate, a guy used to unfair fights.
Maybe if you want to do 1v1 you should stick to bounty hunting or shit like that, and leave fighting to the big leagues..
Or maybe that's why mihawk was shaking and shitting himself at teh idea of fighting real pirates without the entire marine army to support him like in marineford?
