I'd be interested to read about why Eastern Europe remained religious despite the decades of Communist power.

But richer doesn't mean less religious btw. Turkey has a fairly important middle-class and they remain very much muslim.
That's not a bad example. Still you got countries in Europe, China, and Japan who've become less and less religious as they got richer and richer.

There is at the very least, a correlation.

I used to be a history bookworm. Religious history is somewhat interesting to me especially its connection with politics. But I never understood the difference between a canon and a monk ...
Bill Gates told me this:
Why are priests called canon?
Originally, a canon was a cleric who lived in the precinct of the cathedral. The word meant a priest who was under (ruled by) a bishop. In the Anglican church, some canons are laypersons (not ordained). The title is also given to some senior or retired priests as an honorary title.

as long as we use terms like "the west" to denote the largely culturally Christian countries it kinda still does.
You guys are really dense.

I don’t use it that way. Only you do.

Dozens of millions of people who never identified as religious are classified as westerners. What else do you need ? You can’t use west to say church. That’s it. It just doesn’t make sense.

Nope, I use the way everybody else does. I just know what it actually entails and means unlike you. I am not the one being dense here, ironically that is you.

I never said the west is the church idiot. I said religion largely plays a role on what we call the west, and in my latest comment I gave more context as in culturally. I am agnostic and even I can admit I come from a culturally catholic background.

I'll repeat what you said earlier, don't be dense.

Even though they don't identify as a Christian, you bet a lot of their values are Christian, because Christian values permeate the collective imaginary of the western people. The same is true for other civilizations. There is no getting rid of religion. Religion is the start of civilization itself.

Yes, but i suspect that is because there is a lot of old people in Portugal. I noticed that younger Portuguese people don't care about religion as much. Sill a very Christian nation though.

Eastern Europe is significantly poorer than the west so they tend to be more religious.
Really depends on the country

Japan is a tricky case because Shintoism doesn't function like Christianity or Islam do. And China literally saw its religious sites destroyed during the cultural revolution so this is not a fair comparison.
You're trying to bend reality according to your personal biases.

It seems they don't like their own history.
I like the part where the entirety of europe willingly converted to Christianity because they were enamored by the light that is Jesus' love
Communist regimes IMPOSED atheism.
Yes and every citizen of ancient and medieval Europe became Christian because they liked the faith so much. Politics never played a reason, there were no forced conversions nor conquests.
🤡

To make matter worse, most Europeans in the middle ages were not even all that religious, they complained about the church more than we give them credit for. Christianity was mostly about social conventions and how the holidays were named (renamed pre-Christian holidays) and ofc society was governed by an elite that called themselves Christian (while grossly ignoring actual Christian values as passed down from Jesus).

My goat even the Japanese celebrate Christmas for commercial purposes.
