I think I figured it out, why Israel does so many shitty things.
It's the Eren Yeager mentality.
I've noticed, even within my own community, that there exists this sentiment of jewish cynicism. The idea that everyone either hates jews or are indifferent to the lives of jewish people. That nobody cares about us or our lives and hence the only people we can rely on for our own freedom and security is ourselves.
"I don't think muslims will ever truly accept us" - a friend of mine
No doubt this mentality was created through centuries of European antisemitism. From expulsions to ghettoization and pogroms. Ultimately culminating in the Holocaust, the genocide of 6 million European jews.
"Everyone is our enemy, therefore we need to do whatever it takes to free our people, even if that means acting exactly like our enemy"
It's becoming the titan to fight the titans.
I think the walls in this scene are an allegory for power and oppression.
being trapped within the walls = oppressed peoples
seeing beyond the walls = becoming the oppressor
The reason why Eren conflates this with freedom is that when you are at the top, there is nobody above you who can take away your freedom.
And I feel like that is the nationalist version of freedom. It is the zionist version of freedom.
If you've ever listened to the israeli national anthem, it talks about the 2000 year long hope of the jewish people to be a free people in their own land.
But what does it mean to be free? According to the zionists, it means to create a jewish ethnostate. But why does that have to be freedom? Why can we only be free when we are in a land where we are the only ones with power? Can people not also be free sharing a land with others, who while different, share the same common goals and basic moral principles as we do?
And that's where the cynicism comes in. The zionists were so used to being treated awfully in Europe that they no longer trusted that they could be free in a land where they were the minority. Hence, rather than try to integrate into arab Palestine, they adopted plans and schemes to build their own state in the area, while displacing the palestinians.
They bought land from absentee landlords, and subsequently kicked out all of the arab tenants in that land(This would be considered a violation of civil rights in America and probably elsewhere). That's basically what happened in that viral clip of Yakov the israeli settler
They also used terrorism to make palestinians flee their lands, ultimately leading to them either being kicked out of the land altogether, or ghettoized in the West bank/gaza. And that's absolutely ironic, because ghettoization and expulsions were the very thing that europe did to jews for centuries.

To end the attack on titan comparison, its basically hurting others in the same way you were hurt

As to what can be done about this? I have no fucking clue. I feel like its on the onus of the western countries, all of whom support Israel for their own geopolitical reasons, to hold Israel accountable for its shitty actions. I think that's the only way things will ever change. Yet even that seems so far away, as at least in America, the government has become more and more right wing in a way that mirrors Israel's own government.
At the very least, if/when I have kids, I'll teach them not to blindly support Israel. I'll teach them about the real history of what happened, rather than the sanitized narrative that is common in American education. I think that's the least any of us can really do.
