Why should someone who works less than me and worse than me earn same as me?
That's a fallacious question. Let me explain:
1. Wages inequalities are not a representation of a differences in the quality of works in between people. So from the get go, when you say "why should someone who works worse than me earn same as me ?" is problematic. In reality, some works which need more skills and efforts are in reality less retributed than the rest. This is the case of the job of teachers for example. A very important job where skill is highly important and makes the difference between a good and a bad teacher.. and yet.. very poor salaries. Same for job who need more effort (construction jobs, manufacture etc.)
2. This sentence stands on the principle that only people who work less are earning the same as you. When in reality under the belief of meritocracy and capitalism, jobs that demands hours and hours of effort and paid sometimes less than jobs that demand just a few hours.
So in both case, you sentence comes as a denial of the actual reality.
Now, meritocracy is the belief that merit and effort should be able to give you a lot of amount of economic ressources. Its also th belief that poverty happenes because of a lack of skill or just because its just a natural phenomenon.. an unlucky one. But the reality is : There is only a VERY SMALL fraction of people who are seens to have "merit" and are rewarded for their efforts. In the real world, people who wake up at 6 AM to work all day in factories or on a standard desk will not be rewarded for this effort.
In reality those people are seen as "unworthy". And the reason for that is that Meritocracy is not a belief system that is rewarding effort or skill,
its a belief system that is rewarding power.
Meritocracy is a belief, its a myth, it never existed. This video explain clearly why :
This is the belief that we all start with the same chances in life, that rights and opportunities are "universal" when in reality, no one has the same chances. We are all products and living alongside our capitals:
- Economic capital : How many money you and your family has. This will usually put your in a specific class of population
- Cultural capital : This is grossly the amount of cultural information you have at your disposal since birth
- Social capital : This is the relationship your family and you will have access to
Those are the main forms of capitals. In function of the difference between those factors, your life will be completely different depending on your situation.
This is why someone who has already a maximization of those capitals at birth will be FAR MORE advantaged than someone who has none.
And this is why meritocracy is not real and will never will be. Those notion completely negates the impact of skill and efforts in the social and economical ascension of a person in life. In other words, you are probably not being payed a good amount of money because you are skilled, but because of your capitals. (even if skill matters, a little little LITTLE bit)
So, why should we keep the inequalities of wages in front of this reality ? Why should we allow a belief system to increase inequalities ?
Why should billionnaires be allowed to accumulate so much wealth in front of this reality ?
