Nope. I was expecting a true King as Pirate King. Not an empty title given by newspaper of someone that didn't defeated anyone relevant by his own(so Xebec/Rocks Crew he needed marines help not on his own) and just travelled to all islands of the World.

Power level wise : he is the strongest and most relevant mofo around until legends are introduced to us. The flashback didn’t take anything from him.
Roger > or >= anyone in his gen and the mid gen

Not really, as a character Roger doesn't feel worthy of his title and of the legend around him, he feels more like a bum or an usurper who was placed at his position rather than having truly worked extremely hard and earned it. This is similar with other characters such as Oden or Ace.

I first follow One Piece around 20 years ago when I was a student.

Tbh, what he has show is exceeding my initial expectations of him.
At that time, he just give me some Jack Sparrow vibes (who are start to popular around that time). Nothing more.

Never did I imagine he has power like haki, let alone ACoC that not need to touch enemy.

You could ask anyone that follow OP from 2003 or below and I'm confident most of them never imagined Roger will display what he is display now.

My expectations for him evolved as the story progress, tho.




I could imagine that, if I start to follow OP from around 2007-2010, I might said that he is just met my expectations.


If I start to follow OP after 2014 or above, I might said that he hasn't met my expectations.


So, it might depends on when you start to follow OP, tho.
If you also read Naruto before, then there is a higher chance that you will be disappointed by your expectations about Roger

No no I consider it nice that the PK isn't some overpowered dude but has opponents which shows that there are more strong guys in the verse

for different reasons. The old Roger has a completely different presence compared to the current one.

Old Roger you saw in Loguetown is filler added by Toei. There is no old Roger, it was made up in your head.
There is only one Roger.

I think all the mystery which Roger's character used to be engulfed in was transfered post-ts to Joy Boy, while Roger himself was Flanderized into a slightly more mature Luffy.

The early OP Roger was a fully rounded man, who knew obscure stuff and could do earth shattering things.
Current Roger is a strong willed pirate who did all he wanted yet was prevented by fate from getting any results. He's the shadow that couldn't.

We saw everything regarding the main characters from the beginning

The benchmark that was established in the early stages (Shanks serving as proxy). WB was compared to Roger, not the other way around. WB never defeated Roger, the WSM is tied to the DF.

The pre Oden flashback Roger was more exciting tbh though. Look at Garp hyping Roger in the Ace, Sabo and Luffy flashback and then we get this overgrown child version.

I genuinely thought Roger and Prime Bird were a whole tier above Yonko, but it's looks like PK level don't exist.

Roger might win against Yonko but it's always a extreme diff.

In the end considering that Roger don't has a devil fruit or any special lineage whatever, becoming the honorary top 1 with a guy with Gura Gura is good.

Character wise I don't mind Roger, he is cool.

But I say him losing his mystery did making Les cool, but that was inevitable, we need to know what he did/knew
