I'm seeing theories that Buggy could be the next yonko which made me think that Shanks hasn't defeated a yonko either to our knowledge which does give the Emperor Buggy theory an argument.

There's no way you become an emperor just by being strong.

Some ways Shanks could of became a Yonko:

Being on Roger's crew the world government assumed Shanks knows what the One Piece is (Buggy was also on the ship so might not make sense)

Stealing the gum gum fruit (Could of been after he was a yonko)

Shanks showed the World Government that he was against them, Attacked a celestial dragon

Shanks is the son of Rocks

Shanks is an ancient weapon.

Most likely it was this, he defeated some old gen strong guys (like the old gen version of Warlords), clashed with Marines and other Emperors, carved a territory for him in the NW and them he had become soo influential that he started to bem called the Fourth Emperor.

Probably before It only WB, BM and Kaido were seen as Emperors.

This Idea that u have to defeat one of them the get his position isnt something trus, as the Gorosei claim that Marco could fill get WB place, and Teach started to be called one years after when he and Marco finaly clashed.

Took shanks close to 15+ yrs to become a yonko after Roger died. He for sure was leveling up during that time and performing deeds that grew his bounty and infamy. You don't earn a 4Bilion bounty simply for sitting on your ass.
He likely was scrambling for territories with the rest of the yonko. Those little independent island that fly yonko flags.

Fucking up VAs badly and then when they send an admiral you fight them to a stand still without running is probably a good way to raise your bounty that high.

How did the first Yonko (Emperor) become a Yonko? He or She could not have fought a Yonko since they were the first one. It's like the question, "which came first the chicken or the egg?" I don't think you have to defeat another Yonko to become one. It all depends on their individual power (Shanks is obviously strong going by the meeting with Whitebeard), has a powerful crew and is very influential (Seems to have some connection to the Celestial Dragons or at least with the 5 grandpas). Basically, my point is that defeating a Yonko is not the only way to become one.

Shanks has territory, maybe big enough that WG considering to put him into Yonko, also his crew looks strong / at least being hyped (especially in Marine Ford)

I assume Shanks became a Yonko just by being strong himself and having a strong crew.

Since Shanks is part of the original four yonkos along with Whitebeard, Kaido and Big Mom, he didn't have to beat any other yonko to get the title. The four of them all got the yonko title for being in a stalemate from fighting each other.

As for the practical reasons, i think that being able to have duels with mihawk and possibly having the strongest active pirate crew along with some territory and subordinate crews would be enough for Shanks to be recognized as a yonko.

he was fighting with mihawk before and wb said it was famous in new world
his crew probably did also do big things and defeated some big shots and was recognized as a strong crew

he and his crew were strong enough to be recognized as one of 4 greatest crews so he get the title
