Shanks had his scar since he was 27 years old. Which means his clash with Teach was AT LEAST 6 years before he was even a Yonko, way before he reached his prime. Teach joined the Whitebeard Pirates when he was 12 years old and had his first encounter ever with Shanks at age of 14 (26 years before the current time) So it's not far fetched to think their clash happened sometime when both were teenagers since they knew each other for a long time.

Yes, something about Blackbeard is very off. Especially since you need a sharp object to make such a scar, and we've never seen him with anything but guns on his belt? So what did he use?

It makes me wonder. Shanks wasn't off guard which means he was using CoO probably.
