French is my mother tongue, I learned english when I moved to an english province. Unfortunately, I have latino/Algerian roots and can speak none of those languages, but I understand spanish more or less from having family speak it.

My mother's native language is spanish and she can understand portugese/italian and a little bit of romanian just from knowing spanish. Would you say you understand a little spanish/french/portugese maybe romanian just from knowing italian @Finalbeta ?

He should able to follow considering majority of yhe languages are derived from latin.

I find German , french , English difficult to understand though we have french catalonians here who speak catalan and french pretty well.

Yes I understand a little of spanish because it holds many similarities with my mother tongue :)

So I can grasp something without having it studied I guess

I'm really happy I know french because it's painful to learn.

I also took german classes in my first semester of university and knowing english makes it very easy. It just has a few gender rules and conjugations like french does.

The french catalonians most likely understand catalan well from being surrounded by it, that's the best way to learn a language after all.

You are so lucky to speak French.

I have been living in Austria for like 7-8 years and I still have sometimes trouble with these stupid gender rules... They are just pure pain to learn. French is easier at this point.

I find it extremely difficult to understand French people. I have been learning French for like 4 years and it's still difficult...
From german/english to french is a difficult route. If you really want to learn it maybe speaking to a french person or visiting france and only speaking/listening to french could help.

Side note: french used to be an easy language to write but the bourgeoisie didn't want the common people to learn it easily so they made up these crazy grammar rules lmao

Yeah, it is kinda. But for someone like me, who loves learning new languages won't stop me lmao

I guess, then I can say the same about German too. Who needs 3 genders? Really...

They definitely are. My brother's first language is english, he started learning french around 5 years old, he always went to a french school, he's now a teenager and to this day he still makes gender mistakes.

because of? pronunciation? grammar?
Pronunciation is kinda hard but after I hear people say it in the right way, then that's good enough for me.

In grammer...genders. At least there are only two...
I have got somehow problems with genders if there is no logical way to learn it. At this point, French is better than German.

Other than these not really. Listening to French stuff is hard for me, probably because I never really listen to anything French other than a few songs but that's it.

You speak French too?

I am French ^^

Yea, genders is a headache, with absolutely NO logic to why one word is masculine and another is feminine... i have tried to help some foreign friends and my wife with their studying of French, and that's always the biggest issue
