Language and Farming.

Language is self explanatory.

Farming, it allowed for humans to settle in a place rather than always moving and hunting for preys and gathering food. The less our predecessors had to focus on that, the more time they had for other stuff. That lead to the development of the other areas. Atleast that's it in my opinion.

Fire. If we stems all the way back to Stone Age, caveman used to struggled a lot in their lives until they discovered flame to keep warmed and cook foods. Medicine and agriculture are also important but fire is what started everything in my opinion.

Imo it is difficult to say the "best". On one hand our ancestors finally taking a stick on their hand and using it to more efficiently beat another humanoid monkey was the first step of what we have accomplished now, so that is fundamental for everything that come later, the first step of the power of the brain on the other the best is for sure the most advanced piece of technology we have now. Maybe it is computers and everything derived from it, they are at this point in every aspect of the society: smartphones, regulation of traffic, nuclear power plants, medicine and also it is so advanced it can evolve on its own at this point. Almost all jobs can be replaced by the most advanced machines now. Even if you take nuclear weapons/energy that for sure is a field I would discard compared to PCs and all that is related (a world without nuclear weapons or even nuclear plants that can become another Chernobyl or Fukushima doesn't seem so bad).

depends on your own definition of "best".
to me it means an invention that is nearly perfect. that, since its inception, hardly got any changes. at least for the essential parts of it.
my favorite example is the bicycle.
its nearly untouched even after 200 years. 2 wheels with a steerer powered by a human.
its incredibly efficient too and it will work even without modern technology.
