I think that Mihawk came into existence when Oda didn't want Shanks to have way too much importance to both Luffy + Zoro journey.

Having Shanks as Zoro end goal would break how One Piece narrative works

Because thats all mihawk could teach him. Did you expect him to teach his one greatsword style to the three sword style katana weilder? He taught him haki so he could make it in the new world and perfect his skill for their future fight.

Most of what i do is trolling. All im saying is, watch the black blade be a dead end. Its going to be about love and bonding with your sword. Thats why oda wrote "is haki enough" when speaking about black blades.

He wouldn’t want to be WSS, since there wouldn’t be any. So Mihawk is essential for zoro to have a goal. Mihawk makes zoro badass since he himself is badass.
