BlackBeard is an overarching antagonist. He keeps this status over all stories, just like Luffy keep the status of protagonists despite sometimes by relagating in a more background characterization.

In Marineford. Blackbeard is simply a side antagonist. The main one is magellan and Luffy is the protagonist.

The terms protagonists and antagonist follow the direction of the plotlines, they are not relatives to every characters. In Impel Down, there is only one protagonist : Luffy, many allies : Bon chan, Baggy, Mr 3 etc. and one major antagonist : Magellan.
