Hiho guys. I think I solved Mihawk's secret. I am about to present it to my fellow WG people, because I think you guys deserve it.
So let's dive into this fascinating character's secret!

Scars:
I think scars are a prominent aspect of characters in One Piece, especially main players in the story. Be it physically or in an emotional traumatic way. So I have ever wondered if that formula can apply to Mihawk.

Mihawk was actually gassed up about meeting Zoro in Baratie. He saw through Zoro's determination to surpass him and he inflicted Zoro his notorious and proud wound.

What is noteable is the connection between Zoro and Whitebeard.
Zoro did not want to run away from his destiny, he accepted he lost and offered his front to his enemy. A symbol of proud and courageous warriors who never turn their back towards their opponents.

Now that Oda has established this concept I wonder about something...

Mihawk's Past:
I wonderif Mihawk as World Strongest Swordsman has certain inversions with Newgate, the World Strongest Man. If it comes to fame and status across the seas, people like to put both of this characters on the same pedestal. It is interesting which allows to find for inversions and possible clues to speculate on Mihawk's mysteries.

For the first I notice the idea of running away/fleeing/being cowardly. Whitebeard has never been like that is what Oda implies. But what if Mihawk has been like that?
That is my first inversion, it goes along with the huge fan theory that Mihawk might also be connected to the Celestial Dragons.

The theory is simple, in his younger days, before setting out to sail, Mihawk fled from his duties from the Holy Land in order to become the World Strongest Swordsman and duel many great swordsmen. His relatives in the Holy Land did not like this so they chased him down in the attempt to flee and they cut him down whilest doing so, giving him a huge scar on his back. He ended up fleeing successfully but for the rest of the life he had to live with the shame of having a scarred back.
I think there is a reason for his fascination for Zoro and this is slowly being staged by Oda. Zoro will be the reason for Mihawk to change as a person and made accept his shame by the end of the story. Also a reason why Mihawk preferred to interact alone until very recently. Being alone lowers the risk of people finding out about his celestial past.

So yeah that is it guys, Mihawk will have inversions from Zoro and Whitebeard and he very likely could have a scar on his back which will be his big dark secret. That is why he always wears a stylish coat.

See ya around nakama and stay safe!

SBS implied Mihawk's history was with the marines, not exactly the celestial dragons.
I think I will just reply to this fairly.

It was said he was hunting marines iirc, I don't know the exact wording. But it would make sense.

The main reason he is connected with the celestial dragons/holy knight families is because of the recent thing about mentioning these rabbit hunts. Mihawk uses similair speech/phrasing as Holy Knights.

It could be an inspiration for Mihawk tbh if he knows how Holy Knights opperates. He maybe applied the same when he set out to sail, just the rabbits he hunted were probably marines, because he just related them to the World Government whom he would hold a grudge towards.

Could also explains why he is agreeing with the whole idea of Cross Guild fucking up the marines right now.

Was like "meh" at first regarding your theory but more I'm more convinced. The CDs did mention having rabbit hunts, and Mihawk said he's not like those brutes who uses all his strength to hunt a rabbit. He also talks about how people are ignorant to how vast the world is, and seems to know very well what defeat is.
