Character Discussion Most complex character in One Piece

Big Mom and Katakuri :pepebusi:
Post automatically merged:

The pre-skip Strawhats back when Oda liked actually spending time on them.

Arlong and Jinbei

Any of the Marines that question what justice is.

Doflamingo had potential but was ruined by Oda having him being “born evil.”

Wyper was pretty good.
Before dressrosa my expectations of Doflamingo was that he would be one of the most important character of the series and like the main anti hero.... :pepecopium:

Wasn’t the point of Hody that he had no depth? Literally called “empty” because he was nothing more than hatred and racism for the sake of it?
That’s exactly the point, his unmotivated motivation is a realistic depiction of racism and prejudice. A result of generational beliefs and secondhand hatred passed into his very psyche. It is such an irrational way of thinking that is also very apparent in real world racism. Sometimes people just hate for no reason at all, they can try to give their rationale behind it or justify it. Hody didn’t do that, he acknowledged his very hypocritical mindset. He ended up having the very same extremist views as the humans he despises. That’s what makes him complex imo.

Edit:
I’m recalling Fisher Tiger and he seems more complex, he has this deep rooted hatred like a lot of fishmen but can also be sympathetic to humans. In the end, he denied having literal human blood in his veins moreso than his own survival lol

Man stuck between what he believes is the right thing to do and family, only to be betrayed by those he entrusted the future in (Kuzan)

He’s definitely top 5 best written character
Well, that's fair.
Tbh I never understood why anyone could hate him.
His design is great. His personality is great. Even in terms of power scaling he's pretty great (especially in his prime)
Could be in my top 5 or 10 favorites alongside Ace, Sabo, Law, Zoro, Luffy, Franky, Blackbeard, etc. (and that's in no particular order)

Garp is the most basic character out there
Simple minded, laughs off everything, good morals, beats pirates to a pulp, is part of a wicked tyrannical system but is never seen remotely showing signs of any form of ideal or philosophy or questioning the morals of said oragnization. Garp never engaged in any intellectual conversation basically, he is a character driven by superficial emotions, straight as an arrow.
You can consider his plot to be cool and well written but he is in no way a comlpex character lol

You don’t have to be an intellectual powerhouse to be complex, and yes his plot is part of his writing therefore he’s as complex as it is

Don't get me wrong it is not about being an intellectual lol, it is just that Garp has 0 intelligent dialogue just like Luffy
He's a veteran marine and understands a lot about the seas and all but he has no character besides being a jolly sailor with good morals
Compare that to C3, Sengoku and Fuji

One of them is surely Fisher Tiger. He had hate for humans in his heart because he was a slave, but his rational side knew it was wrong,so he tried to follow a good path, altough different from the Otohime one. He even managed to feel a bit of affection for Koala in the end. But taking human blood was too much for his hatred. So i find him complex for his contrast between his hate and his morals.

Plenty of complex characters in OP, one of Oda's strong points
The main issue remains the screentime, and in the case of protagonists the overuse of silly gags

Mentioned already but yeah gotta hand it to Fisher Tiger.

Could have easily been a pretty straight forward freedom fighter with good morals type of character but Oda did a good job fleshing him out far beyond that. His death has to be one of the most powerful moments in the manga with how it portrayed his struggle to avoid perpetuating hatred for humans despite the disgust he himself ultimately felt towards them.

Think the strength of his writing can also be felt in the other great characters surrounding his story. He and Otohime came to mutually respect one another despite their radically different approach since he, on one hand, could understand that she was fighting a generational battle bigger than the struggles of any one indiviual and she, on the other hand, could see that there was still need for someone willing to take firmer actions to help those suffering in the immediate reality.
