Character Discussion Most wasted character in One Piece ?

Of all the characters introduced in One Piece, which one(s) do you think is the character with the most potential (in terms of personality, role and power at the same time) but whose character and potential were utterly wasted by Oda ?

I'd say that Oda did an awful job at writing and using Big Mom and her daughter Smoothie, who's supposed to be the most powerful of the Charlotte family and BMP after her mother and Katakuri and has a very interesting and promising power, both during Whole Cake Island and Wano arcs.

It's clear that he had absolutely no idea what to do with them and wrote himself into a corner by awfully handicaping Big Mom and her powers through totally ridiculous means when it became clear that the Straw Hats and their allies couldn't hope to fight her in WCI and by trying to get rid of her in Wano arc, and by being so inconsistent in his writing of Big Mom and her personality, while finding extremely stupid and bad excuses to keep Smoothie away from the Straw Hats and their allies and not have her fight anyone yet while not allowing either to show their true powers, especially Big Mom with her extreme strenght and incredibly powerful and versatile devil fruit and sonic scream ability. BM's relation with the giants and Rocks, as well as her dream, and her relation with Streusen could also have clearly been developed and explored further.

It's raw and maybe it's premature, but I'm underwhelmed by Vegapunk to the point of being salty.

He was supposed to be the genius grand line scientist who could do all these amazing things with devil fruits, feed them to objects, extract their powers from one user (kizaru) and give them to another (kuma), and most importantly, explain what they truly are. Instead, all we got was some feel good nonsense about people's dreams.

He was supposed to be able to use ancient technology in a way no one else could...in a way he did, but his work got hijacked by the gorosei, and he couldn't do anything about it.

Overall, he's been incredibly "street stupid" especially now that his contingency plan of the ancient robot safeguarding the broadcast den-den mushi failed as well. He let himself get betrayed by his own creation, apparently knew it was happening, and took inadequate measures to prevent the impact.

And, unless there's a curveball next chapter, he was hyped to potentially reveal something new about the void century, instead he offered no materially new information to the reader.

Name dropped in an SBS I don't even know how long ago, maybe 20 years, at least 15...and this is what we get. Even his death scene was pitiful and frankly disrespectful. So much so that I'm still not 100% bought into him actually being gone.

On the topic of Big Mom, I sincerely feel sorry for you folks that are big fans of her. Both given that she was a woman and her downfall arc being the penultimate one of the series, it was mostly written in the stars that she was going to get done dirty by Oda. Her and Kaido were meant to be the last "strong" characters to go down before we entered the endgame. That was pretty much their only purpose, to demonstrate that Luffy was ready for the endgame. The worst part about her nerfed personality to me is how its mislead most of the fanbase to view her as a dumb or childish character, and diminish the edge off of her evilness. Whereas when she was lucid, she was cruel and calculated as the likes of Doffy and Crocodile, if not more. I don't put her strength level as high as you, but as a leader, she was truly everything you'd expect a pirate with the title of emperor to be.

He dropped the ball hard on both the BMP and the BP, the result was a disaster that made me drop One Piece for a while each time.
Lolda mistook BP for Background Pirates when they really should have been the Beast Pirates. I am an Admiral fanboi, but I can't deny we were robbed of a GOATed villain crew in favor of a bunch of ugly samurais no one aside from Lolda really cared about. :peperain:

Oda also could have showed more of the Beast Pirates' empire beyond Wano, and not make Wano the center of everything in One Piece and show the Smiles army and Calamities and Flying Six as a real threat with real stakes and danger.

Except BM of all villains had the most background and motive exploration out of 95% of OP villains?

Oda loves to have a lot of fun with her character in the same vain as Luffy, both are written to be goofballs but have incredible versatility and part of the top food chain when all is said and done. One submitted Kaido into an alliance and the other beat Kaido after going through a gauntlet. Powerscaling brain rots most readers' way of thinking here.

He took the “fun” way too far. Crocodile, lucci and Doflamingo weren’t goofballs. Big mom’s background and motivations weren’t goofy, fundamentally she was a cunning, ruthless dictator who got dumbed down temporarily to allow the main character to progress in the story. The goofy moments were worse than pointless, they ruined her characterization.

Though Tashigi was treated even worse than him.

And they were far more cringeworthy and infuriating than funny.

He definitely dropped the ball hard when writing Kaido's character and story. Lots of issues with it.
That's putting it mildly, with all due respect. There was nothing but issues with Kaido's character and story.

Lolda literally did everything he could to make Kaido go from having the best debut in anime history to a footnote (if even that) in anime history.

Jack also suffered greatly of this, even more than his boss with him being relegated to an afterthought and not showing haki nor a more developed use of his devil fruit nor awakening.
