Yeah it's safe to assume he used FS, he also did before since he knew Apoo's attack was coming. He just didn't know how to defend it.

Last episode cliffhanger when Luffy is getting ready to use Ryou to block Big Mom. Looks badass

Never fully realized how different Luffy looked in the past compared to now in the anime until I saw this. Notably, his head is a little smaller and his muscles show more.
