Even without giving him a proper flashback, do you think Kaido's character would have improved if in his last fight with Luffy, after the awakening of the Nika Nika, Kaido went for a last Hail Mary plot: not turning into a gigantic magma dragon; not trying to take Luffy's giant fist head on; but instead trying to unearth Pluton?
Say he already knew about the Ancient Weapon, but was trying to keep it as a trump card against the WG for the Final War.
And say he also didn't tire himself stupidly by lifting Onigashima for no reason, instead using his flames to levitate the volcanic chamber underneath Wano wherein Pluton lies dormant.
Of course he would have to fail in the attempt, but in doing so inexorably tying his name to the AW more than Croc has done in Alabasta. It'd be a double countdown climax: Luffy has to stop Kaido before he activates Pluton, but it can't be a series of punches, because that only prolongs the extraction process, which itself is sending earthquakes all throughout Wano, killing innocents. Luffy has to be quick about it, a 1-KO-hit, which a giant Bajrang won't accomplish, being easily avoidable.
Would a final Wano act built around Pluton specifically and around Kaido's desperation to be Joyboy at any cost improve his portrayal?
Would an arc cliffhanger in which Kaido manages to fire Pluton once into the distance before fainting, with world consequences to be explored in the following arc (who knows what island got destroyed by mistake), get more engagement from the audience?
