Sometimes the answer is just simple, all the times they hung out drunk on random ass islands; they claimed they were under their protection. His way of making friends is very similar to Luffy, and Luffy got endless subordinates which he didn't even ask for. No doubt Saint Shanks got them in the same way.

I think Saint Shanks has good or noble intentions but is probably involved in some darker things than people expect, yeah. I don't think he's evil, just that Luffy is significantly more moral than Saint Shanks is. I don't believe in the idea that Luffy got his morality from Saint Shanks, what he actually learned from Saint Shanks is "pirates don't fight fair." and "pirates have freedom."
