The situations are completely different. Doffy was weak, much weaker than kaido and he feared him. Kuzan is about the same level as BB, and he has other goals. He wasn't forced into that alliance out of fear like doffy was.

Not really liking the way Oda is focusing more on Blackbeard's devil fruit than haki

But I guess since the character theme always focused on devil fruits, Oda is simply continuing that trend

However if Oda continues to go this route, he'd not really look good compared to Prime beard, who despite having the huge destructive power of the Gura, was also a Haki specialist in all forms(observation, armament, conqueror haki)

He will focus on his haki once him and Luffy will fight, he's too lazy to draw haki for side characters fights.

Surprisingly last chapter he had a side character break free from a df affliction through haki.

Besides they just started fighting anyway.

I was open to the possibility of Shiryu surpassing Kuzan until he ate that Devil Fruit lol. Now it’s a tossup between Shiryu and EOS Burgess. Neither approach Kuzan.
