Hey guys. Sorry that I fell short of my commentary plans for the last chapter... been caught up in a massive video project for my other channel, I am reminded once more of the critical importance of striving to avoid making promises unless you are 100% sure you will keep them.
With that out of the way, I did see these spoilers, and I do offer some thoughts - I am curious if anyone else is feeling the same.
The more I see Luffy fighting high-level opponents in Gear Fifth, the more the clashes and the expressions in those exchanges remind me of these two scenes:
Scene One: Death vs. Asura: Soul Eater - Luffy almost gives me vibes more like Asura here, only instead of on the perceivable evil side, he's on the side of freedom. But the enjoyment of the conflict is certainly there.
Scene two: Roger vs. Whitebeard/Roger Pirates vs. Whitebeard Pirates - the connection is obvious on multiple fronts, it probably goes without saying. Notwithstanding that it is a scene within the same Universe, the part that stands out are the smiles and seeming sense of relief by these two kings of the pirate world as they clash - they were looking forward to this.
Now, to bring all this thought home and express it fully: I of course am not saying the expressions on Luffy's face are a perfectly new thing. There have been many points where Luffy smiled in previous battles with powerful opponents, obviously. So if someone were to get annoyed and claim its not new, they are not exactly wrong - I agree in part. However, they are not exactly right either. (In my opinion). Something feels different about scenes like this. And actually, I don't think the type of smiles expressed are purely the "Nika, the warrior who brings smiles to faces", "Toon Force Luffy", "What Oda said about his goals for gear fifth in the SBS" type of sort.
I'm catching a different vibe here, so I was curious if anyone else felt the same? It looks a lot like Luffy has developed a new level of self-confidence to me. That is what I see in the smiles in scenes like that, assuming my interpretation is not incorrect. Luffy is entering the fight with these smiles because he absolutely has full self-confidence. And that is also where it gets interesting on two points. In previous fights, at many points except maybe situations like Hodi Jones and "fodder" Luffy had panels where it was very clear he struggled with some amount of self-doubt or worrying, here and there. As they say "even the strongest of us suffer from this". Those moments brought Luffy stress, visibly so. He would always push on and overcome it.
This seems fundamentally different. He looks to have no self-doubt or stress, just total confidence. Here is the second angle of importance. Most people who develop this way fall into a trap. The trap is that the opposite of unhealthy self-deprivation and doubt is overconfidence or arrogance - the concept of two radical opposites that are both toxic and weakening. That is what makes Luffy so impressive here. He seems to have attained perfect self-confidence without falling prey to developing over-confidence or arrogance. He is simply confident, minus all the "B.S.". And that's huge. (Very important, because there were occasional panels in the past where one could argue Luffy was being overconfident at moments.)
I do not know if this development will be increasingly permanent or only expressed momentarily in brief panels, but if Luffy wanted to become like that all times I think I would welcome it seeing that he is one of those "Great Pirate Emperors" now.
