That's what the bet was lol , You take Luffy pain , Zoro didn't pass out so that Kuma won't try to kill Luffy after he passes out.
He had no reason to do so in Kamazou fight. Zoro KOed him.

Why would he or anyone harden something they’re not using

Having a black blade more likely than not has nothing to do with swordsman at all
It makes no sense to assume that only swords and even more specifically only true swordsman can permanently harden their weapons

All hardening does is make your weapon tougher something that applies to all weapons. Any weapon you can harden should be able to turn permanently black
Ryuma's kokuto was forged black through a history of battles.

It's not merely that Aramaki is not a true swordsman, but that Aramaki hasn't been using his sword period.

I'm saying the blood loss was trivial compared to Luffy's pain. There was still Hiory to protect, yet he still passed out... from a little blood loss, poor Zolo
