We saw Zoro enter.
Conventient Scene Cut.
Kuma either afterward or during, we're not told.
Later, Zoro thanking for mercy.

That is all we as the reader are allowed to see.
Now why would Oda cut away if he wasn't hiding some missing context.
Show me Kuma Stopping any of his bubbles after someone touches it. Lol bro sit you clown ass down.

Healthy Prime Kuma saying even" I might faint from this ".

Zoro endured that when he was extremely injured.

If yall really sat through this entire backstory, which mapped out in great detail the kind nature of Bartholomew Kuma and the lengths he went through to help people, that then finished off with him growing to admire Luffy, and believing he would one day save the World, and think "Yeah, he was really going to kill Zoro", then I don't know what to say.....

Zoro took the pain. It was no small feat, and was impressive. But to think Kuma was really going to kill him, then you really skimmed through this whole backstory, because you don't understand Kuma's character at all.

Couldn’t Zoro just be thanking Kuma for not killing Luffy when he easily could have?
Because Kuma says:

"So you were alive, Roronoa"
"Thanks to your mercy (the RAW uses jihi which is mercy not benevolence)"

At this point both Zoro and Kuma know that Zoro made a deal and took pain for Luffy. There is no point to reiterate this fact. Zoro knows Kuma knows so there's no reason to say he gave mercy for letting him live. This would be what we call REDUNDANT.

Also the fact, because Kuma knows he let Zoro live and knows Zoro knows he let Zoro live, there would be no point to point this out. That would also be REDUNDANT.

Making Kuma being surprised or pointing out he's alive from the bubble itself after cutting it short and letting fate see if he'd survive or not.

Zoro replying to the bubble being cut short as 'mercy.'

This is called basic grammar and sentence structure. Or how conversations work.
