The creators were trying all they could to get the green light for a book 4. The late ass introduction of lion turtles & energy bending as well as Zuko asking Ozai about his mom are cliffhangers. In the end it didn't work out, Nickelodeon wanted LoK and ATLA had to be published as comics.

Season one was ass too, though yes it got exponentially worse.

The Avatar franchise went downhill when they used it to one sidedly cover US social issues using Chinese esthetics and accidentally turned it into a show promoting westernisation and colonialism (mostly due to ignorance and lack of cultural consultants because of budget cuts)
