I think it snowballed. Likely Roger Pirates + Holy Knights + Saturn were too much and someone started defecting. Rocks downfall was that his crewmates didn't actually like him, they just followed his strenght

My thought:
1. Kaido ran away after getting the fruit (which was given to him cause he was dying)
2. Big Mom ran away not long after that because she’s a dishonorable pirate
3. Shiki and Whitebeards fights split the island into multiple pieces since their fruit powers can do shit like that causing Xebec to be isolated.

But I don’t think Shiki and Whitebeard abandoned xebec, I think it was just the battle field couldn’t handle the fight and broke

Exactly, God Valley was the first time they realized there's a way to get rid of their captain, that's how ridiculously powerful Rocks was, Roger and Garp had to team-up for that to happen.

Neither you nor I can prove whether or not Rocks was at his peak 2 decades before GV, but the odds & logic say he was NOT at his peak when he killed the Admiral.
