If he was the son of an Admiral, it is very likely that the Navy would have taken care of him instead and he would have been known to them. From what I can remember it was revealed in some SBS, Q/A or some other info source that Akainu and Kizaru joined the Navy together as monsters.

I think it all boils down to top 4 of both crew.

Haki + Awakening and if BB really gonna seize the throne then IMU's power to make his crew immortal freaks

Fruitless Teach might already have been a top tier considering his daddy ngl. We might have to reconsider Ace's strenght. We know a Shanks that could already use aCOC got scarred by fruitless Teach.
BB's careless and overconfident behavior makes him appear weaker than he is. Like against Magellan he wouldnt have gotten poisoned if he used his fruit from the get-go to cancel Magellan's ability
