It's not about "taste". You can have different taste, but there are certain appearance based markers that are pretty much fundamental. And there is nothing shallow about it, and it's not a fabrication of the industry but simply biology. Just like a well build, athletic physique with a chiseled face will look more attractive than obesity. Just like men tend to be more attracted to women with curves and bigger boobs. That doesn't mean everything that falls out of this norm has no shot. Obviously personality plays a huge part in long term relationships too. But it's not like conventionally handsome people don't have personality. It's not an either or.
