People wanted Shanks to be what Joyboy is going to be. Luffys end goal, the guy who he surpasses at the very, VERY end. Thats it.
Might have been how this would have worked if it was a Pirate Manga called One Piece. But, whether you like it or not? This is Nika-piece.
And in Nika-piece? Shanks is a bench warmer to the chosen one Luffy aka Nika. That is his destiny. His ceiling as a character.
Like I have said this before in a more mean spirited way, but I really mean it. The SECOND Oda created the Nika myth and Joyboy?
Shanks was finished as a Top 1 candidate by basic logic alone. And, to all but the most hateful Shanks-fans I genuinely feel sorry if this ruined the story for you.

The Jolly Roger of Rocks is a flaming skull which I thought refers to Rocks himself being a user of Mera no Mi.
However, even if that was right, it is not relevant to present-day events so there's gotta be something more to it...

This is the pain @ConquistadoR and @Light D Lamperouge felt, they've never fully recovered mentally. Only a shell of themselves. That one was worse though because it was as direct as it gets, even as a neutral I nearly threw up reading Sukuna glaze coming out of Gojo's mouth.
