He chooses to fight differently, doesn't mean he cannot stab someone off guard to achieve the outcome Shiryu wanted to achieve. Even Kaido picked up a blade and stabbed Kinemon.

Both styles have their use cases. Stabs and cuts are more lethal, shockwave have more raw strength and three-dimensional AoE, as cuts only affect the area around the trajectory of the blade.
