Plus it would have been nice to see some parallel between Zoro/Sanji and Sommer/Killingham. It was the perfect opportunity for all of them to take off through the air. Oda ruined it for whatever stupid reason.

Oda just uses such opportunities for Zoro to interact with others.
He simply loves the idea of Zoro taking taxis left and right, been happening whole post-TS.

Zoro was falling off the island. He used it to travel great distance to get back on the island. It's that simple.

It can be used so Zoro can change the trajectory of his movement in air once, and that's it. Differently Sanji can stay in air indefinitely freely with 360 movements without a problem, something Zoro can't do. It's not that difficult.
