I hope it's not something predictable like Kaido knocked/killed a scabbard...
only because something is "predictable" doesnt mean its bad.
Besides, a lot of people actually think the scabbards will beat Kaido here or will at least bring him to the brink of death before luffy takes his head.

i am obviously not one of them because i know how storytelling works, yet those voices do exist

It'll be bad in this case, imo, because I think Kaido would destroy them, so I hope it is something else, because otherwise that cliffhanger would not be a cliffhanger for me.

But, for the casual reader, the reader that does not follow One Piece so patiently and analyzes things etc.
it seems like the Scabbards are overwhelming him. And for those casual readers (who are the majority) this will be a surprising twist.
Because they do not really know/care about powerscaling.

They read - go to work - do stuff and then read next week again
