Episode was really good.

Even though it was pretty flashback heavy, the direction did a good job transitioning into the flashbacks in a meaningful way, or including them as set up for stuff later in the episode.

For example, the opening flashback from 972 in the beginning of the episode tied in neatly with how the episode ended, with the scabbards impaling Kaido, and Kaido reflecting back on the fight against Oden.

There was also other stuff like Kaido striking a similar pose to 975 to tie directly back to the scene him and Kaido had in that episode.

Even subtle stuff like Luffy getting serious as he grabbed Yamato's cuffs transitioned nicely into Kaido getting pissed at Momo.

There were also a lot of cutaways this episode, so it didn't feel like we lingered on anything that wasn't terribly entertaining for too long, sometimes even cutting back and forth between scenes, for example with the previously mentioned Yamato and Luffy stuff, that was spliced between the Kaido and Yamato scene as well.

The finale of the episode was also excellent. Western animator Henry Thurlow handled the majority of the black and white hallway scene, which is frankly one of the coolest things from One Piece this year.

The stuff with the calamities appears to have been handled by Van Oba and Yang Huang(Yang Hugan seemed to animate Jack getting slapped).

The final finisher with them stabbing Kaido was animated fantastically by Tu Yong Ce. As previously posted, an absolutely insane number of sheets and layers went into animating the 9 scabbards, and the result was fantastic.
The scene also benefitted greatly from the imagery and transitions to Oden stabbing Kaido, as well cool stuff like Kaido's club falling into the molten boiling oil as opposed to landing on the ground, seamlessly transitioning to Kaido thinking about Oden.

This is definitely Satoshi Ito's strongest effort this arc direction and storyboard wise, and he had excellent animators to back him up.

Even Shingaki was pretty tolerable this episode.

I also think that a lot of the Kaido shots throughout the episode may have been corrected by Tu Yong Ce, or the other animation supervisors, as they were always pretty sharply done.

Overall, a generally solid episode with absolutely fantastically highlights towards the end.

Next episode also looks pretty decent, with Kazuya Hisada taking the animation supervisor seat, and seemingly doing some polished looking layouts and key animation in the NEP.

Haven't watched the anime in years but decided to watch to see how they will animate the Kaido strike and my god Toei fucking ruined it with way too many unnecessary flashy sets and it took way too long from the running to the cutting. It should have all been just one continuous flow of movements of them running into the arena, entering, then cutting Kaido. Instead we kept getting this stupid Oden flashback which totally ruined the flow and then we didn't even get to see them actually piercing Kaido. WTF???
Maybe you shouldnt watch anime tho
