ONE PIECE Live Action - Episodes Discussion Thread

I really liked the season 1 big thumbs up. I can see season 2 happening cant wait for boraque works and albasta saga.

Adding chopper means vfx money .

I like how Garp , koby, buggy are given more depth . Unlike in manga buggy is terrifying in LA.

Disappointed Don kreig and Gin are not given depth i can understand the show cannot be faithful to every panel but decent job overall.

Most hardcore fans are complaining LA are not faithful to each panel. Its good director came up with different way to clash potential more episodes.

Third episode in.

Above average I'd say. Best part is Usopp for sure and Kuro was good, very menacing like.

Three things irked me though, the camera work for some scenes is just weird if not downright bad, Zoro looks like he's following Luffy against his will, having a disinterest face and attitude the whole time, just relax man, and wft are we still following, I don't if he's boy or a girl, Koby's story of all things.

While the first and second were 8.5 imo, I'll give this episode a 6/10.
Usopp's actor was born for this role . He literally did the same in manga.

Kuro's actor was creepy. I have to say everyone did good .

Cant complain most anime liveaction make blunder but the director stayed faithful to core.

I've watched 6 episodes and I'm disappointed with how they handled Baratie doesn't nearly have the emotional stacks that the manga did and feels kind of random for Sanji to join up with the crew
Not assisting to Zoro vs Mihawk, Not Krieg fight and Gin having a very minor role really screwed up Sanji's development in that arc

Episode 5 was amazing.
Things I loved;
  1. Oda really got involved in production and made sure to cut off loose ends and told the production to act accordingly.
  2. Mihawk intro was goated.
  3. That’s the way Don krieg should have been handled. He served no greater purpose than to have Zeff say sword and spear or shield quotes.
  4. Baratie so far is exactly what I expected it to look like in real.
  5. They toned down Sanji’s simping for better but not flirting or even a wink to the Full Body’s girl was a crime. Lol
  6. Zoro’s oath to Luffy was spot on.
  7. They really offed Merry.
Things I felt off:
  1. Syrup village as a whole didn’t felt much impact full but it never did imo.
  2. Really hoped Kuro would get washed by one of those canons.
  3. Reveal of Luffy and Garp relation needed more hype moment. Guess the production just went full time on using every key aspect of the show to present One Piece never knowing if they would get another chance.

I agree but i think netflix shortened the arc . Imagine giving depth to each character it would be 12 episodes . They were cautious if op LA would be hit or miss.

Maybe Don kreig will be added in season 2 . Hopefully that would be closer.

Episode 3:
They're gonna use these custom title cards for every episode it seems. Last one it was Buggy's jolly roger, and now we have Usopp's. Cool little nod for fans, and a piece of eye candy for newcomers.

Usopp's actor is really charismatic. And so is Helmeppo's, he steals the show every scene he's in.

Kuroobi looks like trash, but let's pretend that's what fishes are supposed to look like outside of water lol. Those triangles are supposed to be on his elbows, yet they're on his triceps for some reason.

Don't know why we already have Post time skip Zoro here lol the guy showed one facial expression in 3 episodes. Give us East Blue Zoro dammit

"Real beauty, huh?"
-"You can talk?" - I legit loled here, great scene

Coby and Garp playing shogi (?) reeks of skippable to me.

Kuro's speed...it's really bad ok. Imo it was a thing they could've cut out completely at this stage of the show and just put all their stocks into his intelligence instead.

Arlong looked good in the scene inside Buggy's tent

Man, these kid actors...cringe transfer happens in every scene. Kid Usopp is somehow worse than Kid Luffy

Watched episode 2 too. I liked it,altough a little less than the first one,but its a good episode. Buggy stole the show! And the Luffy-Shanks hat scene is great. But why Fat Beckman and Ugly Makino? 🤣 Shanks crew is still cool anyway.

I really wonder how they will get chopper done, humanoid form is probably costume, so is the small deer form. 2 actors? And then completely CGI deer form?

Don Krieg and Gin could have easily had more lines and screen time. Kuro and his gang had 2 episodes, maybe Kuro's episodes were too long? They were done dirty. I didn't like the Don Krieg character in the manga but seriously this was wrong.

Thinking back on the manga I have no doubt that Garp and Koby were getting their side show to also develop them further in the Live Action. Make them more relevant.
Meaning: Watch out for any other side stories in the future chapters. I am sure from now on we can predict who gets more screen time in Live Action. Or the other way around. Koby surely will start playing a bigger role from now on.

I am considering myself a long time big fan, not extremely hardcore but it's definitely one of my favorite shows.

I am not complaining about EXACT match that would be ridiculous. I like the overall show, but there are few moments that should have been more SIMILAR to the original. Gin as you mentioned.

And therefore I'm worried next season about some side characters that really mattered. The doctor from Drum Island specifically. Hope they don't fuck that one up!! The giant rabbit fight would be too awesome / funny to leave out.
For Alabasta I'm worried they will leave out characters like Karoo, Mr 13.

One good side might be on how they reuse important characters.
Early Blackbeard introduction?! More screen time for Luffy's father?

All in all I'm not bothered about changes. Episode one of Live Action felt absolutely nothing like the manga yet it was incredibly well done! They need to make sure to not leave out memorable moments and also to not ruin them.

One issue with Cowboy Bebop was exactly the same issue we have with the Gin appearance. They missed the entire point of that encounter and the conversation between them. At least they've done the Sanji Zeff back story well, although not entirely accurate.

Episode 4:
- No Jango...damn

- Young Zoro and Kuina are patients zero of cringe

- Zoro getting Kuina's sword was also a weird scene. I guess this is when Zoro's aspergers really came to light because the guy barely moved his facial muscles during his best friend's and rival's funeral

- This arc (Syrup Village) has been the weakest on all fronts - acting, directing, decor

- Zoro's character is great in action scenes, but everywhere else he's just a drag. I hope the Mihsawk encounter changes that

- Man, We Are when they're sailing out on the Merry...

- "Grandpa?!" - this is one of the changes that didn't sit well with me. Not because they changed it, but rather because Garp wasn't properly hyped up to the Strawhats. When they see him in Water 7 his full pressence is in their face, and they see his rank with their own eyes. Thus the shock about a VA being Luffy's grandpa. But let's see where they take it in the next episode.

- General thought on all episodes so far: - As far as live action anime goes, this is impecable. But as a TV show I don't see it as anything more than an average Netflix show

Episode 5:

- Garp throwing cannon balls - peak

- Zeff title card - another peak

- Red Foot Ramsay is here lol

- Mihawk's delivery takes away from his act a bit. He sounds too much like a primadona, but we got him sinking a galleon at least.

- I like the bigger Baratie, it allows for more variety in scenery

- Zoro vs Mihawk set up - This was one of the changes I didn't fully enjoy. Mihawk appears out of nowhere behind Zoro who isn't even impressed let alone shocked to see his goal right in front of his face. I have to chalk up his carboard emotions to Makenyu at this point.

- The fight itself is great. If they look at what they did right here, future fights could look even more spectacular

- But, again, Mihawk sounds like a trust fund kid. His declaration to Zoro needed more energy to it, yet it sounded like an off hand remark

- A general point: Main fights suffer from a lack of grandeur mostly relating to the lack of onlookers. For example we had Zoro vs Mihawk in front of a grand total of 3 people.
