Apple TV released a full trailer for Prehistoric Planet season 3 and it looks so good.

It looks to me like there are wolly mammoths, wolly rhinos, ground sloths (possibly Megalonyx), giant ground sloth (either Eremotherium or Megatherium), smilodon, homotherium, giant short faced kangaroo, marsupial lion, glyptodon, a teratorn vulture, doedicurus, a species of dwarf elephant, a giant Flores Island stork, New Zealand moa, I think a Macrauchenia of some kind, Megalania and a Megaloceros.

They even have Steller's sea cow bros. It's peak.

They even have what looks like giant otters of the genus Enhydriodon. That's a surprise for sure but a welcome one.

Since Megatherium has a prominent portrayal in Walking with Beasts, I think they'll go with Eremotherium.

That makes sense + Mega was the hairier one, no? I think Eremo had less fur, not certain though.

I doubt Amphicyon will feature. It perished a few million years before the Ice Age.

I wish they'd take a break from the Ice Age and give us some Miocene madness. Megalodons and Livyatans and Megistotheres, oh my!

The extinctions are so recent that ecosystems still haven't fully adapted to the loss.

Isn't there a deer in NA that adapted to running fast purely because it used to be preyed on by American cheetahs?

Also iirc this is part of the rationale behind bringing mammoths back, apparently they'll have positive effects hypothetically if allowed to rewild in certain areas.

If I recall correctly, the amount of hair each one had is debated. I think the no or minimal hair argument goes along the lines of them being "gigantotherms that would overheat with a shaggy coat". The shaggy coat argument goes along the lines of "it was colder and drier back then and xenarthrans have the lowest metabolic rate of placental mammals".

There isn't concrete fossil evidence for either stance though I think Mega is more often portrayed with hair due to living in colder parts of South America while Ero is nude due to living in warmer parts.

It would be real nice for other periods of the Cenozoic to get some prime time.

I'm holding out hope because what with the dwarf elephant and the Flores stork, we could be getting an "Island biomes" episode. Cuba would be ripe for that episode.

Also, if they're going to Flores, that is where that species of extinct Hobbit hominid lived. This could be their big break.

Pronghorn are the chaps in question. They look a lot like deer but their closest relatives are giraffes funnily enough.

They're maintaining speeds to escape a predator that hasn't walked the Earth in over 10,000 years.

Aye, something about herds of reintroduced megafauna compacting the snow so it doesn't act as a heat insulator for the soil.

First big Columbian mammoth depiction in media since Primeval, hell yeah.

Also Elasmotherium! I'm curious to see what they'll make of the horn.

Looks like we got one sloth right each.

I didn't even know Stegodon had dwarf elephants, I only knew about S. Ganesha and the ginormous Chinese one.

If it's Arctotherium Angustidens I'm curious how they'll handle the size, I've heard that the commonly brought up 1.2 ton estimates are actually incorrect and the animal was about the same size as the bigger A. Simus specimens.

Also Titanis coexisted with that American cheetah we spoke of, right?
