Ranking the Soulsborne-Sekiro Games

#61
World design while you play the game is top notch, otherwise I dont really care how its drawn on paper, theres probably some explanation anyway
Ds1 has good layout (at least before O&S) then it deteriorates in real time
Ds3 map is whatever but god tier PvP and bosses

Easy money already did that, theres a lot of agility boosting equipment (didnt do ivory king tho fuck that)

The bonfire ascetics are also game changers, if that was available in ds3 i might reconsider

The DS2 DLCs are actually pretty solid. And DS2 has a bunch of hidden NPC interactions and quests.

Elden Ring bosses are unfortunate but let’s be real, it is pretty much the definitive souls game. Going back and playing DS1/2/3 after Elden Ring and it’s pretty apparent that Elden Ring is a step up in most regards.

Dark Souls trilogy story and lore > Elden Ring though.

I actually agree somewhat. You don't realize how much adding a jump button, customizable weapon arts, actually sensible poise, and overhauled shields add to the game until you go back and play the others.

I still would not put it in my top 3 though but I'm comfortable with 4.

Dark souls 2 ain't that bad if I'm being honest, I've replayed that one the most compared to the other two. Sekiro is still the best though.
It's not a bad game imo, but it has BY FAR the most issues objectively

Not only that, Elden Ring actually massively improved magic gameplay. Souls games are pretty much designed to be played by melee builds in some form, while Elden Ring has much better build variety because they gave each RPG aspect the focus it deserves.

All Elden Ring needed was the DS3 territory defense covenant system and the game would be unstoppable.

I recently revisited DS1, to make the gameplay remotely engaging I headed into the catacombs as a SL20 with a +3 battle axe. I didn't do any shortcuts and played it by the books, eventually reaching the tomb of giants bonfire. I looted the area and all, then came time to head back to firelink shrine. God that fucking sucked, literal despair trying to find my way back, all alone in the dark getting fucked by bonewheels and immortal skeletons, with no bonfire warp option to bail my weak destitue low level character out of this misery.

After a long struggle, I made it out, the joy I felt walking up the Catacombs entrance stairs, with sunlight rekindling my sight
The ever so warm firelink shrine music soothing my heart
Dark Souls 1 built different

I'm trying to come up with new challenges, what do you guys have in mind

Why the hell would you do that? I know fromsoft gamers got masochistic tendencies but there's a limit.

Anyways, my favorite challenge:
1- everytime you kill a boss, you discard that weapon
2- whenever you die to open world or a boss, you discard your equipped weapon
3- Can't level up until you kill a boss, and you're limited to 5 levels per boss(if you don't use all the levels ups before you kill the next boss, you lose them).
4- you can only have 3 weapons in your inventory at a time

This means you're always underleveled and every death is a set back. Manage those weapons well.

At first I only meant to loot upper catacombs, grab the great scythe and get out, I fell in the hole leading to the blacksmith by mistake, and said why not 😂

Go look up ZeroLenny DS challenge vids.

His “beating Dark Souls using the IGN guides” are hilarious. Lmfao

Ranking their quality objectively would be a monumental task, therefore I rank them according to my own enjoyment playing them:

1) Dark Souls 3

I don't know what it is, but something about the lore, world, music and overall atmosphere just gets me every single time. It's just pure bliss for me.

2) Bloodborne

Not a single bad thing I could say about it. Love the combat, love the lore, love the atmosphere. Very close to DS3 but if I had to choose one game, DS3 would edge it out. Just enjoy it that tiny bit more for whatever reason.

3) Elden Ring

Elden Ring has tremendous strengths, but also flaws. I don't like the combat system as an example. Many bosses move like they belong to Bloodborne or Sekiro, while your own character doesn't move this fast at all. Therefore beating them requires cheesy tactics (or tactics that don't suit your playstyle) for most "normal" players, which simply doesn't feel right. On the other hand the open world has an amazing design and the scenery can be breathtaking - just remember the first time you walked out of Castle Stormveil to see Liurnia of the Lakes.

4) Sekiro

The best combat system of all Fromsoft games. Once you mastered it, it's just pure enjoyment. The flip-side is that it's a rather short and linear game and doesn't offer that much lore-wise compared to the other games. Still a banger though.

5) Dark Souls 2

I also enjoyed this one, but there are many flaws you can't overlook. Especially the linear level design and quantity-over-quality approach when it comes to bosses.

no ranking: Dark Souls 1, Demon Souls (haven't played them)

Wait do you guys think ds2 has worse hitboxes than ds1 @Elder Lee Hung @TheKnightOfTheSea
I haven't played DS2 enough times to tell

I've played DS1 3 complete times and DS2 only once

I did start a second playthrough but it was right after ER and it felt too slow

DS2 is just overall designed worse than DS1. The whole ADP stat gives DS2 the illusion of having trash hitboxes.

I do enjoy DS2 but I would say it is objectively the worst game in the trilogy even with the DLCs which are quite great.
For a casual run I agree, DS2 falls short
DS3’s gameplay is just too smooth, definitely best bosses, and DS1 has the nostalgia and lore (great first half, shitty second half tho)
DS2 is the middle child, always gets the blame lol

Seriously? I guess I’m a hardcore souls player, I finished these games well over 100 times, did speed runs no hit no bonfire SL1 and other kinds of runs, probably only played 2 games outside of souls the last 10 years 😂
Hell last week I finished ds2 in 1 hour 25 minutes

I've played Lies of P(pinocchio soulslike) more times than I've played DS2:usoprice:

DS3 is the easiest for me to replay because of all of the exciting bosses near the end.

I've only played it twice though, only did one Sekiro playthrough despite returning to the boss rush mode a lot, and have only played Elden Ring once but plan on doing it more in the future. Doing a Bloodborne run but put it on hold for... TF2 plol.

my first run was DS1-DS2-DS3 in like... 2022. I think Bloodborne was around that time iirc

DS3 is completely peak, almost a flawless game imo. Maybe challenge/speed runners would disagree bit that ain’t me. Impeccable bosses, peak atmosphere, lore, story, music, etc…

My one critique would be the DS3 early game kind of sucks, like the game really doesn’t hit its perfection for me until Irithyl.
