I'll give you a very very VERY basic rundown of what mafia is;
So you have 3 different factions, you have Town (the good guys), Mafia (the bad guys), and the independent who have their own unique win condition.
The ultimate goal of this game is for the alignment you're playing as to eliminate all players who doesn't share same win condition as you, so for a town player (which is the majority) it means to eliminate all of the mafia players as well as some independent roles who doesn't win with town, and vice versa for the Mafia players.
It's a game about lying and seeing through lies, but all in all it's all in good fun!

Oh and I should perhaps add that the game operates in phases!
You have the day phase and the night phase.
During the day phase you can openly chat with everyone in the game in the game thread, where you can try to find people, or trick them, all depending on what your goal is. And in the Day phase everyone has the ability to vote one player off, or namely "Lynching".
During the nightphase is where normally all actions take place, which is where some players can "kill" people off, effectively removing them from the game.
These are the two main ways to "eliminate" another player, as well as a quick run down of the phase system.
Of course, I'm just giving you the basics of the basics here!
