I really don't know why I should. Everyone here is blinded by nostalgia. They don't care about the story at all. I would only talk to walls.

I can give you an example excluding myself and this nostalgia thing.

My gf is younger than me and she never watched db/dbz when it was aired, she watched it with me a couple of years ago and she really, and i mean really liiked the ssj1 moment.

OP is her favorite anime (she's not a manga reader), and Luffy is one of her top5 fav characters, she really likes him.
She had no idea about G5 and i didnt spoil her anything because i wanted to see her honest reaction. She could be an exception among Luffy fans for all i know but she didnt like it at all.

Only the original Super Saiyan was cool and amazing. Every subsequent form is just a rehash of the original trying to capture lightning in a bottle for a second time.

The only other SSJ transformation after the original was Broly's LSSJ. That movie was peak with how much of a menace Broly was. Too bad he was also braindead, but at least this Broly has character to him.

lets be honest, it kinda did lol. Gohan's SSJ2 transformation is considered one of the most iconic moments in shonen, and SSJ3 is so over the top in terms of transformation and design it became iconic in its own way lol

And to keep up with that, Toriyama just went "hmm, longer hair and less eyebrows! Yeah, that's the stuff!"
All of the power ups are the same - pump up the base stats of the character, and visually give them different hair.

Gohan's moment would've worked well even if it was him unlocking SSJ1 for the first time and being stronger than anyone expected due to his mix of human and saiyan genes. But nah, we needed SSJ2: Electric Boogaloo

SSJ2 was the beyond perfect form, and it was supposed to be unique to Gohan. SSJ3 yeah that one really was an asspull but it somehow managed to become iconic lol

SSJ suffers from Dragon Balls popularity. If the series had ended in the cell games, SSJ1 -> SSJ2 would've been seen as the perfect progressions, from Goku -> Gohan. Instead the series kept going on, then revived and nowadays people see the SSJ as overly saturated

A better approach for afighting focused guy like Goku would've been to have him master and tweak different fighting styles from the universe and incorporate them with SSJ1 than just dye his hair and say he's now X times stronger

The long hair and no eyebrows is also a design people would quickly associate with dragon ball. The average causal has barely any idea of the Gear 2 pose or G3's design.

LSSJ isn't as legendary as the original SSJ, but it is up there as one of the best transformations in fiction. And definitely >>>>>>>>>>> G5.

What's amazing is that this was attainted with just a movie lmao, original Broly = GOAT.

It was the fact that Broly was a menace and the transformation ripping him apart with the music and the effects. It was actually just a goated moment from that movie and skyrocketed his popularity.
