As the title says, let's talk about supreme blades a bit because thus far it's not been properly explained.

We know from the blade classifications that had been presented early in the manga that there exist 50 Skillful Grade Swords, 21 Great Grade Swords, but only 12 Supreme Grade Swords


And the only supreme grade swords we know thus far are

- Yoru
- Shodai Kitetsu
- Murakumogiri

- Ace

With 8 others which are still unknown

The interesting thing about this blade classification however is the introduction of black blades

Black blades

We know that Yoru is a black blade

Shusui is also a black blade

And Hitetsu brought up the fact that turning a blade black might raise it's rank

Yet from what we know, Ame no habakiri and Enma(not a black blade) has the same rank as Shusui which turned into a black blade from Ryuma's history of battle


With this raising few questions

- Since Ryuma's Shusui has the same rank as Ame no habakiri, Enma or Wado Ichimonji for the matter despite neither of these 3 blades being black blades, with Hitetsu pointing out the fact that Enma's rank can increase by turning black, does it mean that Shusui's initial rank(before being turned black) was even lower than this(among the 50 Skillful Grade Swords) ?

- Same question could be asked about yoru. Did it have a lower rank before being turned black(among the 21 Great Grade Swords) ?

- And since Shodai Kitetsu, Ace and Murakumogiri have the same rank as Yoru without being black blades, does it mean they could turn out to be higher blades than Yoru if turned black ? And if it's the case, which rank would it be ?

One thing I want to point out is that I dont buy the blackening process increasing the rank of the blade.
I think there is a misunderstanding in the translation or in general what Oda meant with it.
The characteristic of a Kokuto is extreme hardness and thats what increases when forged black.
It doesnt refer to overall blade ranking. Blade rank always remains the same as it was initially crafted.

So, both Yoru and Shusui were the same rank they are now before they were forged black as well.
Enma will stay the same rank but the grade of its hardness will increase if/when forged black.
Zoro will have only 1 Saijo O Wazamono and that will be Shodai Kitetsu which he will take from Gorosei.
Regarding the poll, pretty sure that Yoru was called the strongest.

The interesting part is guessing who had/has the remaining 8 Saijo O Wazamonos.

When a blade in the same Grade becomes a black it jumps a level but when we talk about a saijo o wazamono also it becomes a black blade , that sword can't jump to a level higher but it becomes a the strongest blade that's what we have here .
