As a Zoro fan, I really couldn't care less about Shiryu, even if he may be a future Zoro fight, it seems clear that he will only be a problem to Zoro due to his invisible fruit, but to come here ans downplay what Shiryu did when it's clear he damaged Garp heavily which gave Kuzan and the rest an advantage is funny. I don't think Shiryu could've defeated Garp 1v1, even with his devil fruit but that doesn't mean he didn't contribute massively. Zoro scarred Kaido, it still didn't mean he could take him to extreme diff, even if he didn't sustain damage from Hakai.

Gigachin of the rain

if that wasnt the nail in the coffin then u can literally match the kanji in raws with this panel right here

context : the strawhats had an extremely hard time against oars and oda used the same kanji for kuzan when he talked abt garp

the only wiggle room out of this is kuzan blatantly lying to blackbeard about garp's strength and that doesnt make any sense

From what I've seen, the term used can mean "just barely" or "finally", depending on the context.

People forget that Japanese is a completely different language, where there often will not be a direct translation but the general meaning will have to be expressed in a more unique way.

It is up to individuals to decide how to interpret the text, and I am sure everyone will do so objectively, without any agenda.
arguing semantics in a japanese series translated in english is always going to be agenda ridden because of how different the japanese language is, with many words that hardly translate literally to english. People are going to pick the translation suiting their agenda the most, it's natural. I do it too
Still, while not bilingual I do know speak some japanese without having to rely on AI/deepL/ or google trad

"やっと/yatto" is an adverb. it closest meaning would be about achieving something that wasn't easy/after putting effort but it can also simply be used to describe something more general, like finally reaching your destination "aa yatto tsuita" "hah, we finally arrived"
This is why it can translate to finally/barely/at last depending on context (or sometimes outright omitted)

Here are few examples of やっと being used in One Piece from different characters and in different context, next to english translations. Maybe it'll help give a better idea

(can read it as *Do you FINALLY get what's happening now?!*)

Wwhen we think in english of fights won "barely" in the series we normally think of Luffy vs Lucci , Akainu vs Aokiji, Luffy vs Katakuri. Garp in Hachinosu wasn’t that. It wasn’t easy (nobody claimed it was for the matter) but I doubt Oda would have drew the BBP bar Pizarro spotless one day after the battle while Garp is like a mummy if the intent was to convey they defeated Garp by the skin of their teeth (which in my mind is what "barely" entails).
TCB translating Kuzan words as "team effort" was the best way to put it in english all things considered.

I've actually been accused of being your alt, so it is funny to see you make such a detailed response.

This indeed is helpful information, as it shows the nuance of the term.

The simple solution is, we look at the events that transpired to conclude what is the more probable interpretation, which brings us back to the square one.

This is purely a matter of the opinion, but I think it is obvious by the way BBP stood at the end. Compare that to Straw Hats after fighting Oars or Pacifista, where all of the strongest fighters were sitting and laying down exhausted, it is clear this wasn't an extreme diff fight for BBP. But of course, there are those who would disagree.

I personally can't think of an accurate way to translate it by keeping the literal meaning while making it coherent in English.
Myb smt like "Our team effort finally beat him", I wonder how Viz will translate this.

A lot of fools can't take in the fact that Kuzan came out of Egghead with Garp punching power, barely farted with his busted logia, wavering at the thought of taking down his former mentor, and still looking clean without any bandages two days after the fight
:akaman:

The biggest butthurt is probably Shiryu getting the ghost treatment though
Going for the kill + team effort, take a rest bro.
