Selling data is a lot more profitable to companies than selling their own products nowadays. Just look at Facebook and Google. They're always portrayed as those "successful" companies, but what do they really do to get all those profits? Sell your data. I mean, that's technically theft, but nobody seems to care lol.
And on top of it, these companies don't even pay taxes.

Yeah that's absolutely true. I studied the data protection act and privacy as part of advanced computing many years ago and all Google, Facebook, Microsoft etc do is completely violate that constantly.

Google removed do not be evil from their slogan a few years ago too.
We discussed that constantly in Business Class. We were told not to sign up for stuff by our prof, but then we were all like "Too late, we already use Google/Facebook, etc. ". I mean, the idea behind that all is not bad per se. But they'd have to charge fees for memberships to pay their employees to get by without selling data and for some fees are already something they can't afford paying.
