Powers & Abilities The gomu gomu no mi shouldn't be a special fruit

#1
All devil fruits are good, all devil fruits are useful. It makes perfect sense why the world government would guard it and why shanks would steal it. Even with zero mastery, this fruit still grants immunity from bullets and physical blows.

However, I think it would be really dumb if it turned out that the gomu gomu no mi was a special devil fruit. I mean, we're 1000+ chapters into the series and this is the first we are hearing about it. Not a single other person noted anything special of the gomu gomu no mi, not even shanks who stole it from the marines.

Yet the editor's note at the end of this chapter left me worried. I really hope it doesn't turn out that the gomu gomu no mi was the fruit of roger, or xebec, or joyboy. Or that it somehow has a secret overpowered ability. Luffy is enough of a chosen one as it is, there is literally zero purpose in making the gomu gomu no mi special. I mean its such a weak power that pre-skip, Luffy was shortening his lifespan via gear 2 and post skip, relying on haki and advanced haki, just to use it effectively. In marineford, where Luffy used his powers for all the world to see, nobody said shit about the gomu gomu no mi.

Why can't it just be a weak fruit that Luffy found a way to use well?

It would bother me if it was revealed to have an extremely powerful ability but if it's just for legacy reasons (e.g. Joyboy former user) then I don't have strong feelings about it, I guess then it would be a Sabo situation with some being extremely offended and others not minding it. If it's both a legacy fruit and has some ultimate power then it's a true shit show.

Well it's awakening must be secretly overpowered, otherwise Oda wouldn't bother to hold it back for so long.
But yeah I'd dislike it if it was previously used by Rocks or Joyboy, without any comments by anyone from the older generation saying anything.
I would prefer if Vegapunk just theorized it's awakening and predicted it or something...

Hype / Portrayal wise I expect an abundant power level when it comes to it. I'm not totally sold on strongest of all yet complexively however, we will see.

Too bad we have Sengoku failling to have Ope Ope no Mi and still being Fleet Admiral. But Who's Who WENT TO IMPEL DOWN for losing Gomu Gomu no Mi that is not even a special fruit.

Also we have WG sending a fodder to obtain Mera Mera no Mi while Fujitora is at same island. But I bet Mera Mera no Mi is irrelevant even that is a logia and was the DF from the son of the King of Pirates right?

OP is not about "an underdog who struggles and wants to become PK"
Instead, it is about "a chosen one destined to be PK"

So, this explains how Luffy got tons of special treatments.

I always low-key felt that gomu gomu no mi is special.

Shanks was in east blue carrying it was first indicating in itself. Why shanks never mentioned it is simply because plot doesn't warrant it.

Infact assuming that gomu gomu would be weak is kind of going against the story set by oda for luffy

It's just i just can't seem to root for Luffy anymore if he doesn't contribute something to invent or escalate his powers. I like Gear 2-3-4 the most compared to haki stuff, exactly because Gears are Luffy's original invention. He thought about the methods to pump his blood vessels or inflating his bones and muscles, he tried to apply it the most effectively to use in combat etc, and all of it using a fruit that is seen by others as useless in combat. It's Luffy's effort, not his fruit. That's the foundation i like the most about Luffy's, he creatively makes a useless liability (Gomu2) into a lethal weapon. He's contributing.

Now haki, not so much, willpower is so generic and overused nowadays by shonen tropes etc. So translating that into physical power, needs a specific twist to make it original. To this point i think Oda's execution for this haki stuff is lazy since he juggles so many things like lore and many characters etc, but sacrificing explanation of how a power works - and more importantly, how a character especially how an MC should be responsible of handling and improving his haki assets to differ his powerlevel from others - just to prolong 10++ chapters against fodders and hyping everyone up,

...and finally applying that the MC is so powerful just because he is destined to be that strong, thus just spoonfeeds him with all the strongest power application in the world without his own effort, is just wrong. How can i root for a character like that? And now the author is on the way to take away his effort to create Gears and attributes it to the specialness of the fruit itself instead? To me it depicts that the author is on his way of being burned out creatively lol.

Immunity to blunt force and bullets already made it pretty special to begin with. But as far as it being some kind of uber fruit? Nah....

I think people are just feeding to much into highlighting the fact that the World Government had the fruit before. If it was that valuable they would have had Admirals guarding the thing, not a preskip Rob Lucci level character.
