This is a common trope in manga / anime : to have a character who is not only attracted to girls/boys but a whole part of his gimmick is to be the "perverted" type etc.

What do you think of this trope ? Boring ? Fun ? Creppy ? Horrible ?

What are the "pervert characters" done right for you ? And what are the bad ones ?

What type of jokes do you like / make you smile ? And what jokes you find too much and too far ?

PS : you can obviously talk about Sanji given he is in this trope of characters but this is not a Sanji only threads, this is a thread about all of them.

Well there are different types of manga and anime perverts, they are all substantially bad on different degrees for observing such behaviours but I would say Ryo Saeba, for example, despite being what we know he is, is also a man that would give his own life at any time to save someone else's. So still fiercefully condemning them all, at least for their bad personality side by taking other personality quirks into account as well, but not the authors' choices which look finely structured regardless.

Ryo did some weird stuff too and went quite far. I like this show a lot but the guy is no better, and maybe worse, than a lot of characters on the perverted side.

I don't like perverted characters much.


After sometime either their gags get repetitive and annoying or even creepy

It really depends how an author makes the perverts funny.

For example, there are perverts like Kondo and Sarutobi in Gintama who are huge stalkers and perverts and thus perform gags in which I mostly roflmao'ed. Look at this scene:


This gag itself has so much context how the pervert behaves, it's also amazing how Sorachi comes up with these funny gags lmao.

In conclusion, as long as their perversion is not utterly cringe or very annoying, perverted characters can be quite funny. It is a matter of successful gags. I do think Sanji's simping would be much more bearable if Oda wouldn't use the same lame ass gags over and over and over and over again.

I don't like pervert characters but I don't judge them by that quality, unfortunately Japane has one of the worst cultures on earth (and please spare me from talks about being respectful for other cultures) pedophilia is essentially an open thing in Japan and almost anything that is considered a TABOO in western world is an acceptable weakness for Japanese. I'm not saying that they that don't have any TABOOS or MORAL standards, I'm just saying that they are much more acceptable towards things that we consider disgusting. In Japanese movie, manga, anime they just have to have at least one pervert character, it's part of their culture, and being perverted Japanese is whole different thing than being western perverted character. I don't judge character by their gags, I more than enough realize that pervert character in manga is the result of Japanese culture which I don't like, so just remove that part from a character before judging it, if that character wasn't in Japanese manga then he probably wouldn't be a pervert in first place, so why should I judge a character from something that was forcefully attached to him? Same thing goes for characters with other horrible Japanese aspects attached to it, I just remove it from them and only then I judge them, this the reason why I never said anything about Sanji's weakness or perverted side, I'm fully aware that characters like Sanji soffer from Japanese culture.

I am genuinely curious : what makes Jiraya pervert gags fun or good for you ? Compared to others.

And I don't talk about the overall character, just the pervert gags.

Most current Sanji women gags bored me to death and I think current Sanji nosebleed/pervert side since TS is too much. (except few occasions done right)
