All cousin marrying jokes aside, I just want to clarify that isn't as common between pure blooded families as one would think. While the more extreme pure blood supremist families like the Gaunts may have engaged in cousin bonding recreational activities, the other Pure Blood families were content to marry half bloods once in awhile to give the gene pool a bit of diversity and flavour.

A pureblood and a half blood having an offspring will mean that said offspring is also considered a pure blood. And there are quite a few half bloods that married their way into the Malfoy family, and they are considered the top of the social hierarchy. We can also tell that the Black family has no issues with marrying halfbloods as they would have never agreed to a match between Narcissa and Lucius if this was the case, not to mention Bellatrix wouldn't dote on Draco if there was a disdain for marrying half bloods.

So yeah, the pureblood families always marrying only purebloods or their own cousins is a myth, evidence only points to the Gaunt family partaking in such degenerate behaviour. The Gaunt family probably started doing that to preserve the Parseltongue ability, more chance to pass that unique ability down if you only marry your own family.

It's only when a pureblood decides to lose their self respect and marry a mudblood that we of House Slytherin will look down on you...or if you decide to marry a werewolf like a certain degenerate witch.

actually nevermind im wrong, according to jk rowling, you can't have any muggle parents or grandparents (wasnt aware of the grandparent part) if you want to be considered a pure blood so if a pureblood and a half blood has a kid together, that kid is still considered a half blood

a bit weird, but i guess a 3/4 blood doesn't have the same ring as half blood so thats why the author went with that decision
